Short Hills Provincial Park covers an area of 660 hectares, making it the largest park in the Niagara region. It is named after the rolling hills formed by glacial erosion over 12,000 years ago. The park has seven trails, including the Paleozoic Trail, which offers remarkable views of the Swayze Falls.
The Welland Canal is a shipping canal in Ontario, Canada, and is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes Waterway. The canal runs across the Niagara Peninsula, connecting Port Weller on Lake Ontario to Port Colborne on Lake Erie. The canal, being the only natural waterway connecting the two lakes, is constructed to resolve the navigational challenges being caused by Niagara Falls. Since its opening, there have been four different routes for the canal, with the current being the Fourth Welland Canal. The Southern end of the canal at Lake Erie is 99.5 meters (326 feet) higher than the northern end at Lake Ontario. The canal includes eight locks, each is 24.4 meters (80 feet) wide, and vessels typically take about 11 hours to traverse its entire length. Approximately 3,000 ships pass through the Welland Canal each year, transporting about 40 million tons (88 billion pounds) of cargo. This canal has been a significant factor in the development of Toronto, Ontario.
We will start our hike from Short Hills Provincial Park, following forest trails to reach the Welland Canal (around 18 kilometers), which will take approximately 7 hours (may change depending on the actual walking pace).
